What this means

Now your pension is in payment, it is paid to you every month for the rest of your life and increased each year, with everything you need to manage it available online and from the helpdesk.

In payment

Your pension, paid for life and looked after for as long as it lasts.

  • Looking after your loved ones

If you die, a pension may be payable for life to your husband, wife, civil partner, or in some cases a partner you live with. A cash sum may also be due if you die within five years of retiring, so keep your Expression of Wish form up to date.

  • Increased each year

Each April your pension in payment is increased in line with the Scheme rules, helping it keep pace over time. Different parts of your pension increase at different rates.

  • A note on tax

The way pensions and inheritance tax work together can change. For your own circumstances, please speak to a financial adviser or check the latest guidance before making decisions.

Here to help

A helping hand, whenever you need one.

Behind your pension is a support network here to help. Whether it’s a question about your payments, your tax code or P60, a change in your circumstances, or simply something you’d like explained, you can speak to a real person who knows the Scheme. No query is too small, and we’ll always point you in the right direction.

Tell us who should benefit.

In the first five years of retirement the Scheme still pays a cash sum if you die. An Expression of Wish tells the Trustee who you'd like it to go to. Complete it now, and update it whenever your circumstances change.

Common questions

Pensioner questions.

  • When is my pension paid?

Your pension is paid monthly, directly into your bank account. You can see your payment dates and payslips at any time in My Pocket Pension.

  • How is my pension taxed?

Your pension is treated as income, so tax is deducted under a code set up by HMRC. Each spring you receive a P60 summarising the pension paid and tax deducted in the previous tax year. If your tax code looks wrong, HMRC can change it.

  • Will my pension increase each year?

Most pensions in payment are increased each April in line with the Scheme rules. Different parts of your pension may increase at different rates.

  • How do I change my bank or address details?

Log in to My Pocket Pension to update your address. To update your bank details you need to contact the administrator. Keeping these current makes sure your payments and P60 always reach you.

  • What happens to my pension when I die?

A pension may be payable to your spouse or dependants, and a cash sum is paid if you die within the first five years of retirement. Keeping your Expression of Wish up to date helps the Trustee decide who should benefit.
